In Memory

Today on the second anniversary of Roderick's passing, Mrs Shears and Mrs Jamieson gathered along with family and friends at his 'place' within the school grounds for a time of remembrance.
In 2009 a tree was planted at a special ceremony and the Year 6 children will recall this occasion as the Cultural Group performed a haka and memories were shared.
This year the plaque has been set in its place and the tree is thriving. Roderick's Dad thanked the school for allowing the family to gather to reminisce about all the wonderful times everyone had shared with him. Although we all shed a few tears we could also smile about Roderick's love of speed, fun and life in general.

Trash to Fashion Update
Year 5 and 6 are busy working on their Trash to Fashion projects. Most of the children are working through the researching, designing and planning stages. The children are working in groups, pairs, or as individuals. All are busy gathering materials and completing tasks to add to the group's finished fashion piece.
Children are also busy exploring different options to join their materials by researching and carrying out practical tasks (with a few pin pricks along the way). An environmentally friendly way to link things together would be their best choice.

Update on the Year 5/6 Team
The team will be focusing on Te Reo Maori this month as Matariki (Maori New Year) celebrations are approaching on the 14th of June. There are some great articles and activties in the Newspaper in Education series (NZ Herald) providing more information and celebrations around Auckland. This is the link you can visit to look further into this: http://www.nieonline.co.nz - go to Kidspace and complete the quizzes.
If you and your family would like to read more information on this there is a variety of books in our school library and public libraries.
Please keep an eye on our ROPS website for the latest sports news, travel information and results on upcoming games.
We are moving into our design and creating stage for our 'Trash to Fashion' topic. Children will be needing to continue to collect and bring in various recycled materials that they will be using as they produce their piece of wearable art.

Heart Jam
After practising our routine for several weeks all the children throughout the school were ready to share in the performance to the tune 'I can hear the sound of your heart beating'. We met up with our buddies and sketched hearts on our section of the courts before joining in the aerobics routine together. Dressed in red we made a colourful sight.
Donating $729 to the Heart Foundation we have helped children who have been born with heart defects. Well done everybody.

Art by Room 29
Room 29 used the following poems as inspiration for the artwork shown in the video on this blog.
Firstly they sketched their pictures, having read the poems. Secondly, they went over the outlines with a sharpie. Finally, they used powdered paint dye to colour their pictures. Room 29 hope you enjoy viewing their work.
The Sunshine
The sun rises over the horizon
it is Tamanui-te-ra
a blazing furnace,
godlike,
to warm
my chilled skin -
Ah! I am warm.
The sun shines
to ripen the fuits of summer
Oh! What life
joy will blossom
and drive
away sorrow
that is within me -
Ah! I am warm.
The Rainbow
The sky is misty
the sun shines
a rainbow is seen
it is a god.
Light misty rains fall
the sun shines
a rainbow is seen
it is a go.
Red, orange,
yellow, green, blue
indigo, violet -
these are the colours of the rainbow
